Józef Lui
Henryk Goldszmit’s brother-in-law
The son of Nuchim Lui and ????????????; born ?????????/ 1875 in Warsaw; died on 22 July 1909 in the same place.
Józef and Anna Goldszmit’s marriage certificate has not been preserved. His death certificate has not been found, either. Józef’s death was announced in an obituary published in the Warsaw-based Nowa Gazeta. We can learn, among others, that Józef died after “short but immense suffering,” leaving his wife, sisters, mother-in-law, and brothers-in-law in deep sorrow. Maria Falkowska claims that, according to “the oral account of Igor Newerly, Józef Lui committed suicide because he had suffered from an incurable venereal disease. In 1986, a small fragment of a marble tombstone was found in the Jewish Cemetery in Warsaw, next to the grave of Józef Goldszmit. The inscription carved into the stone read: ‘Józef Lui, of blessed memory, died on 22 July 1909, at the age of 39. Rest in peace’” (Biuletyn ŻIH 1997, No. 1).
