Absent?
Anna Janicka

It is worth noting a meaningful absence of various social groups in The Doll which, at that time, were a part of urban society, an element of Varsovian landscape. Namely, the novel features no depictions of Russians (Suzin, Wokulski’s friend from exile, is the exception that proves the rule) or representatives of other European nations, no Tsarist army, no Russian officials or their families, no Cossack patrols or Russian Orthodox clergy. As a matter of fact, the novel also lacks substantial representation of the Polish clergy (the one exception is the bishop who can be glimpsed in aristocratic circles). There are no images of Jewish, protestant, or Orthodox religious life.
