The typhoid epidemic covered the entire district Krochmalna Street, where the exists have been closed. Residents were not allowed out of their homes, each house was in quarantine. It was no longer necessary to hang a large yellow warning sign on each gate with the words “Typhoid – no admittance,” because such signs were on closed outlets. Dantean scenes played out among the residents who were unable to get out into the street. A supply of hot food was organized, and purchases of provisions were made in such a way that the House Committees collected money from tenants, issuing it outside through a window to officers of the Jewish Order Service, who, according to a list, purchased the necessary articles and delivered the products by the same means. This did not last – as it normally did – two weeks, but several months, for when the disease was extinct in one house, or even in a number of houses, it was enough that on the last day of the quarantine one of the residents fell ill with typhoid symptoms, and the entire neighborhood was again condemned to isolation.
